In this post, I explore different techniques; batik, bonded fabric, applique and reverse applique. The challenge for me is still to create beauty, but to go beyond my previous limits… again, some mistakes turn out quite well!

I have been experimenting and developing ideas using bonded fabric and simple printing with paints and dyes. Over the last year, I have collected a variety of different fabrics, plastic, ribbons etc… and I have hand and machine dyed my own fabrics… some experiments, of course, come out as disasters, but there is always something to learn…

There has been a long delay since my last posting.. life is like that sometimes… these images relate to my work studying with Sian Martin (www.distantstitch.co.uk). I’ve chosen the “star” theme, and have explored a variety of methods for painting and printing paper and fabric, in my chosen colours of violet and lime.
Much of the fabric I have found is “recycled” – from second hand shops, old clothes and other people’s leftovers. It’s amazing how once I decided to use these colours, I saw them everywhere!

I really do love embroidery. I love the texture, the feel, the dynamic. It is seriously underated as a medium. My sojourn to the evening branch of Woking’s Embroiderer’s Guild, has inspired me to complete a couple of samplers. These are to be used as part of the guild’s joint piece on Recycling and Re-using. I decided to incorporate bits of rusty metal and tea stained baby wipes… and odd bits of plastic.
Seasonal greetings to all.
I thought I’d post some of my students work. Year 9s have been making huge pieces of confectionery, and Year 11s are looking at Cubism… I’m very proud of their achievements.
I’m off to Somerset tomorrow to visit my parents… not seen them since the summer… I’ve decided to take a small piece of work with me; my embroidered evening bag. It’s very pale gold dupion silk, covered in tiny embroidered patterns. I’m using it as a sampler for practicing new stitches and designs. I might even finish it for Cath’s wedding…. ah yes…. that dress…. after the fitting we came up with a few design changes.. rather exciting… and I’m not telling what they are until after the day! Wait for the photos…
The girls are in the kitchen making beady things, and Jonathan is hoovering… and I’m drinking mulled wine listening to carols on the radio…. and the kittens are looking thoughtfully at the tree… hmmm…
Have a wonderful Christmas,
Cate
