I have been experimenting and developing ideas using bonded fabric and simple printing with paints and dyes. Over the last year, I have collected a variety of different fabrics, plastic, ribbons etc… and I have hand and machine dyed my own fabrics… some experiments, of course, come out as disasters, but there is always something to learn…

It’s the end of the year, and it’s raining, so I’ve spent the last three days enclosed in my warm studio. The wall hanging “Cityscape with Church” is at last finished. I’ve tried out new ideas, and it’s all pretty pleasing. I’ve been inspired by terrific textile artists, in particular, Maggie Grey and Sherril Khan… and my favourite of all, Cass Holmes. Thank you!
The banner will be placed in the main entrance of St John’s Church, West Byfleet, Surrey, UK this Sunday… It has been made using 100% recycled fabric from second hand shops, charity shops and leftovers. I used a variety of greens and yellows to create the words, and a mixture of orange, red and purple for the background.

Hello blog world people,
The banner I started for St John’s Church, West Byfleet (UK), has gone through a metamorphosis… well, I changed my mind really. The background pieces I created earlier weren’t really working, so I decided to start again.
I have created a patchwork quilt type background, with the image of the cross repeated.. in the top middle is the light shining; I’ve embellished with thread, beads and buttons.. On top of this background, the words “Welcome to St John’s” will be appliqued in bright lemons and limes…

The centre cross, with a close up of the light…
The pic on the left shows the whole banner.
I’ve been experimenting with dyeing, and using various pieces to create into quilts… but a couple of bits needed further development, so I have begun my “Sunshine” pieces. Based on the glorious sunsets of west Cornwall, of which I never tire… that bit when the sun disappears into the sea…

I have hand tie-dyed very soft old cotton with a tangerine colour. I will now embroider and embellish to my heart’s content…
